Postdoctoral Position on Epigenetics and Cancer Chemoprevention (Heidelberg)

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 2,300 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The Division of Epigenomics and Cancer Risk Factors (Kst. C010) headed by Christoph Plass is offering a

Postdoctoral Position on epigenetics and cancer chemoprevention
(Ref-No. 118/2011)

This position is available in the workgroup "Cancer Chemoprevention and Epigenomics" headed by Clarissa Gerhauser (www.dkfz.de/en/tox/cancer_chemoprevention) for an EU-funded project combining cancer chemoprevention and epigenetics.

Description:
Methylation of CpG-rich sequences in gene promoter regions has been identified as an early and potentially initiating event in carcinogenesis, and consequently present an interesting novel target for cancer prevention (review in Huang, Plass, Gerhauser, Current Drug Targets 2010). Our project aims at investigating the potential of chemopreventive agents in modulating DNA methylation and histone modifications during carcinogenesis, with a focus on breast and prostate cancer. We are using genome-wide approaches based on immunoprecipitation of methylated DNA followed by CpG island microarray analysis or next generation sequencing. Differential DNA methylation of candidate regions is validated by mass spectrometry-based MassARRAY technology (Raval et al., Cell 2007). Molecular biological techniques will be used for functional analysis of identified genes. The project will involve in silico screening for candidate compounds, in vitro investigations with enzyme preparations and i!
n cell culture, as well as a short term rat uterotrophy study to assess in vivo efficacy.

Your profile:
We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious scientist with a Ph.D. in molecular biology or a related area. The candidate should have a background in breast or prostate cancer chemoprevention and a strong interest in epigenetic mechanisms. We require at least one peer-reviewed first author publication. In addition, excellent experimental and analytical skills are mandatory.

The DKFZ is a member in the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers and performs research in the areas of basic and translational cancer biology.
We offer an international and dynamic work environment, access to a broad range of continuing education courses and the possibility to contribute to projects at the frontier of cancer research.

Please submit your application in one PDF file with a letter of motivation, CV, list of publications, diploma and certificates, and contact information of 2-3 referees.

The position is limited until July 31, 2013.

For further information please contact
Dr. Clarissa Gerhäuser, phone 06221 42-3306.

The German Cancer Research Center is committed to increase the percentage of female scientists and encourages female applicants to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, a person with disabilities will be given preference.
