PhD/Postdoc Position: Computational Physics of Granular Matter (Erlangen, Germany)

The Institute for Multiscale Simulation of Particulate Systems at the
Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, invites
applications for an open postdoc or PhD position.

Subject of our research is the dynamics of granular matter, that is,
dissipative many-particle systems. We investigate these systems
numerically (mainly Molecular Dynamics and CFD) as well as
analytically (Statistical Physics, Continuum Mechanics). Our theo-
retical work is closely related to experimental research which is
partly also performed in our group.

Main research subject of the successful candidate is the numerical
simulation of complex many-particle and multi-phase systems,
statistical physics and continuum mechanics of dissipative systems,
including visualization of the results. The research is performed
in direct cooperation with experimentalists. Some teaching of under-
graduate classes (1-2 hours per week) may also belong to the duties.

Successful applicants must hold a PhD or M.Sc. (or equivalent) in
physics or a related field. We expect the applicant to be experi-
enced with the numerical simulation of physical systems, excellent
skills in C/C++, preferably under Unix/Linux.

The positions are available for a period of 2 years with the option
of a continuation, dependent on funding. The deadline for applications
is October, 14th 2011.
