Germany, is inviting applications for
1 PhD Position in Statistics (75 % E 13 TV-L; 3 years)
within the Research Training Group (RTG 1644) “Scaling Problems in
Statistics”, funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG), starting
February 1, 2012.
The highly interdisciplinary Research Training Group aims at the
solution of current questions in the areas of agricultural economics,
genetics, ecology, econometrics and remote sensing by means of
statistical methods, and at the development of the latter. It
distinguishes itself through a structured graduation program, joint
supervision, and a study program consisting of methodologically oriented lectures and interdisciplinary research seminars.
The Research Training Group involves the Institutes for Mathematical
Stochastics, Agricultural Economics and Rural Development,
Agroecology, Animal Breeding and Genetics, Ecosystem Modelling, Forest
Inventory and Remote Sensing, Genetic Epidemiology, Statistics and
Econometrics, and the Courant Research Centre on Poverty, Equity and
Growth in Developing Countries. The advertised position will be
located at the Institute for Statistics and Econometrics, Prof. Kneib.

Model choice and variable selection are crucial tasks in any
statistical analysis and in particular when setting up a regression
model. However, they turn out to be nontrivial in complex types of
models comprising covariates measured on different scales and in
particular in spatial, additive or mixed models. Within the project
“Scaling Problems in Model Choice and Variable Selection”, we will
focus on developing reliable model choice and variable selection
strategies for such complex models. The successful applicant will work
on improved variants of Akaikes information criterion, but will also
consider Bayesian approaches and modern statistical learning
techniques such as boosting. The approaches developed in this project
will be applied in collaboration with other interdisciplinary projects
of the RTG.
The successful candidate will hold a M.Sc. degree or equivalent in
statistics, mathematics, or in related fields with strong quantitative
skills, including programming skills.
The University of Göttingen in an equal opportunities employer and
places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for
women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.
Disabled persons with equivalent aptitude will be favoured.
