PhD scholarship: Medical Bioinformatics,University of Rostock,Germany

PhD scholarship: Medical Bioinformatics, Institute for Biostatistics & Informatics in Medicine & Ageing Research, Faculty of Medicine, University of Rostock, Germany

A three-year PhD student position is available in the Medical Bioinformatics group at the University of Rostock in northeastern Germany. You may work with data on ageing, adult stem cells, neurodegeneration or cancer, developing bioinformatics tools that help to improve health and treatment by understanding the molecular underpinnings of ageing and disease. On adult stem cell data, you may join ongoing collaborations on cardiac regeneration and neuroregeneration. On disease, you may collaborate with researchers working on Alzheimer, fibrosis, colon and breast cancer. You will be part of a research group that is attracting increasing amounts of funding to tackle “problems that matter”, see http://www.ibima.med.uni-rostock.de/ .

You should hold a diploma/masters degree (or equivalent) in computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, the life sciences or a related area. You should have previous experience in data analysis and programming. A keen interest in science is more important than previous experience in the field of bioinformatics, although experience with (high-throughput) biological data such as microarrays, with biological databases and with comparative analyses and machine learning is considered a plus.

Please email applications to Georg Fuellen (bioinfo-jobs@med.uni-rostock.de) (one PDF file, consisting of CV, brief statement of research interests and qualifications and contact information for 2-4 scientists who may write a letter of recommandation). Review of applications will start September 26, 2011 and will continue until the position is filled. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be preferred if they possess equal qualifications. Unfortunately, due to state regulations, application expenses cannot be reimbursed.

In the summer, Rostock and the Baltic Coast is a number one vacation area in Germany, with a very pleasant climate and a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

Kind Regards
Georg Fuellen
