W1 Junior Professorship in Physical Oceanography (Hamburg)

The School of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Institute of Oceanography invites applications for a W1 Junior Professorship in Physical Oceanography starting as soon as possible (ref. no. JP172).

Applicants are expected to demonstrate research experience on an international level as well as a successful track record in procuring external project funding. The University places particular value on the quality of teaching. We therefore request applicants provide details of both their teaching experience and their future teaching objectives.

Tasks and responsibilities:
The junior professor will be expected to research and teach in the area of ocean dynamics. We are looking for a candidate with experience in the general theory of ocean dynamics as well as in aspects of meso-, submeso- or small-scale turbulent mixing with respect to theory, numeric modeling or observation. The junior professor will thus thematically and methodolog-ically enhance the existing capacity of the Institute of Oceanography. The successful candi-date will be required to participate actively in planning and implementing research initiatives, for example the establishment of a new collaborative research center (SFB). He or she will also be expected to work within the excellence cluster CliSAP (Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction).

Candidates should demonstrate willingness and the ability to carry out interdisciplinary colla-boration within the Institute for Oceanography, with the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) and more generally with the KlimaCampus. Candidates should be prepared to teach on the bachelor’s and master’s programs in the marine and climate sciences.
