The chair of Plant Breeding invites applications for 1 Postdoc (German gov. salary TV-L 13) and 2 PhD (German gov. salary TV-L 13/2) positions for 3 years beginning in October 2011. Research in our group is focused on the development of molecular and statistical tools for plant breeding and genome analysis. The candidates will work in an interdisciplinary team of plant breeders, statisticians, bioinformaticians, and biologists.
Project description:
Genome-based breeding strategies play an important role in increasing the selection efficiency and accelerating breeding processes of crops. To pave the way for genome-based breeding in rye (Secale cereale L.) the project aims are i) to develop a high-density genotyping SNP array and target-specific gene-based markers, ii) to characterize the diversity patterns in rye breeding pools using population genetic methods, iii) to evaluate the potential of genomic selection for improving yield and yield stability, and iv) to identify and validate genomic regions involved in frost tolerance as well as yield- and quality-related traits in hybrid rye. The project is called RYE-SELECT and is funded by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research).
