Doctoral Scholarships in Natural Language Processing & IT Forensics
Deadline: 15.08.2011 (open until filled)
The Center for Advanced Security Research Darmstadt (CASED) [1] at the
Technische Universität Darmstadt has an opening for its PhD scholarship program in the area of Natural Language Processing and IT Forensics starting immediately. The scholarship lasts a total of three years. Thereby, the possibility of scientific qualification and training will be offered. The candidate will be associated with UKP Lab [2], Department of Computer Science, Technische Universität Darmstadt and supervised by Prof. Iryna Gurevych. We are seeking candidates with an excellent university degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or a related field. The knowledge of German is a plus.
An important research focus will be the development of novel methods for preventing or detecting illegal activities in user-generated discourse. The research question to be addressed is how natural language processing can be applied in order to recognize potentially dangerous, anomalous or otherwise security-relevant content in text documents on the Web, emails and other types of user-generated discourse. This requires identifying and disambiguating topics, (real-world) entities and the relationships between them. To this end, methods such as topic detection, named entity disambiguation or relationship extraction have to be investigated which fit the special application purpose and target domain. This research should result in precise recognition of security-relevant information in documents which enables end users to take appropriate measures.
Technische Universität Darmstadt is an autonomous university with a
worldwide reputation in research and education. The university’s focus
on technology - from the perspectives of engineering, the natural
sciences, the humanities and the social sciences - ranges from basic
research to applications for daily life. CASED is an IT Security
research center at Technische Universität Darmstadt in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (SIT) and the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt (h_da). CASED constitutes a research infrastructure for forefront IT Security research. The UKP Lab, founded in 2007, is a research lab comprising several research groups in Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics and concerned with statistical and lexical-semantic methods for analyzing the text data on the Web. CASED intends to increase the number of female scientists and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference.
The application should follow the process described at
