sjd-geo sjd-phys-math sjd-engineering : Meteorologist, Physicist or Engineer - Research UAV and Autopilots (Tübingen)

The Environmental-Physics group at the Centre for Applied Geo-Science, University of Tübingen, Germany, studies turbulent atmospheric flows using automatically operating unmanned airborne vehicles (UAV) and numerical models. Our main interests are the turbulent energy and momentum exchange between the heterogeneous earth surface and the lower atmosphere, the water cycle, and the interaction of turbulent flows with aircraft foils and ground-based structures like wind converters. We develop meteorological sensors (wind vector, humidity, temperature, etc.) for research UAV and data-analysis software for airborne measurements. Currently, we are looking for a

Meteorologist, Physicist or Engineer

with interest in conducting research in the fields of

Research UAV and Autopilots

The tasks include
* further development and testing of an existing research UAV (2 m wing span, 6 kg)
* further adaption of the already implemented Paparazzi autopilot
* performing flights with the research UAV on meteorological field campaigns
* teaching bachelor and master students in exercise and laboratory courses

The ideal candidate fulfils the following requirements:
* a master degree in atmospheric science or aeronautical engineering
* experience in atmospheric science
* ability to operate a model aircraft or UAV
* flexibility and willing to travel

The position is to be filled on 1 October, 2011, or later. The appointment will be for three years, an extension of the contract is possible. Work place is Tübingen. Salary will be according to the German public service (50 to 75 % of TV-L E13, corresponding to experience). The candidate will be given the opportunity to write a PhD thesis.

In case of equal qualification and experience physically challenged applicants are given preference. The University of Tübingen aims at increasing the share of women in research and teaching and encourage female scientists to apply.
