SOLAS is a project focussed on the biogeochemical interactions between the surface ocean and lower atmosphere (see http://www. SOLAS-int.org).
SOLAS is seeking to appoint an Executive Officer to lead the International Project Office (IPO) at the Leibniz-Institut für Meereswissenschaften (IFM-GEOMAR), Kiel, Germany. The Executive Officer will be assisted by a Project Officer based in Kiel and a Project Officer based in the SOLAS Nodal Office at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. Together, these postholders will assist the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) chaired by Eric Saltzman (University of California, Irvine, USA) in implementing the SOLAS Science Plan and Implementation Strategy, organising and servicing meetings of the SSC, working groups and task teams, liaising with the sponsors (IGBP, WCRP, SCOR, CACGP) and other relevant organisations, seeking and managing project finances, representing the project at national and international meetings, maintaining the project web site and interacting with SOLAS national committees and groups, as well as other international projects. r will be expected to represent SOLAS around the world and national and international travel is anticipated.
Main duties and responsibilities
• Supervise the international coordination and execution of the SOLAS Science Plan and Implementation Strategy and the Foci Implementation Plans by assisting the SOLAS Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) and national partners; develop and implement the SOLAS mid-term strategy; plan and facilitate the SOLAS synthesis exercise.
• Liaise with and report to the SOLAS sponsors (SCOR, IGBP, iCACGP, WCRP), the International Project Office (IPO) sponsors (NERC, BMBF), relevant organisations (APN, IAI, among others) and national SOLAS networks.
• Organize, facilitate and document discussions/decisions for annual Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) meeting. Report to the SSC at the SSC meeting and when required by email
• Support proposals development and secure funding of SOLAS projects, SOLAS Open Science Conferences, SOLAS Summer Schools and other SOLAS-related workshops and activities.
• Lead and manage the SOLAS IPO and Nodal Office team.
• Supervise the organisation of the SOLAS Summer Schools, the SOLAS International Open Science Conferences and other SOLAS-related activities.
• Supervise the project’s communication activities (biannual SOLASNews and monthly e-bulletin)
• Maintain project accounts and prepare financial statements; manage the project finance; secure the IPO funding.
Person Specification
• PhD or equivalent in environmental sciences or a related discipline
• Interest in facilitating multi-national and multi-disciplinary research activities
• Highly self-motivated and organized; acute attention to detail
• Excellent communication skills in English.
• Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with a multi-national community
• Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally
• Some knowledge of web page design / editing and accounting
• Demonstrated ability in coordinating research and organising large conference (200pp)
