PostDoc ,Institute of Bio- und Geosciences, Juelich, Germany

The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences: Agrosphere (IBG 3) of the
Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH is offering a position for a

PostDoc

Depending on qualifications the salary scale of the PostDoc will be
13 - 14 TVöD. The position is limited to 30 months.

Accuracy quantification and enhancement of remote sensing products of
the ESA Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite is the main
goal of a project, which is funded by the German Ministry of Economics
and Technology (BMWi). In order to achieve this goal two main tasks
have to be accomplished. First, it has to be quantified in which way
the seasonal variability of different vegetation covers influence the
SMOS retrieval. Second, a data assimilation framework has to be
developed in order to account for the vegetation dynamics in the
operational processing of data products. The needed parameters and
their spatial and temporal changes have to be estimated. By this
approach an enhanced product will be generated, which better
represents the actual soil moisture patterns. This is important for
the enhancement of weather forecasts. Main tasks of the position are:

•       In-situ measurements of soil moisture and soil surface
temperature during airborne campaigns,

•       Soil moisture modelling,

•       Application of a radiative transfer model,

•       Model integration into a data assimilation framework for
parameter optimization,

•       Documentation of the results in peer-reviewed ISI refereed
Journals.
