PostDoc or PhD Student (Geosciences, Physics)
for a three-year project.
The main goal of the infrastructure measure TERENO (Terrestrial
Environmental Observatories) is to create observation platforms on the
basis of an interdisciplinary and long-term aimed research program
and provide long-term statistical series of system variables for the
analysis and prognosis of Global Change consequences. In this context
the candidate will focus on the optimal combination of measurement
data and model predictions, using data assimilation methods. It will
be of special interest to analyze and assimilate jointly different
data types recorded at several TERENO sites, including eddy covariance
data, cosmic ray data, soil moisture contents from point measurements,
lysimeter data (evapotranspiration) and further hydrologically
relevant measurements (e.g. discharge, groundwater level). In
addition, also data related with the carbon balance are measured and
should be used in a data assimilation context. This concerns carbon
dioxide exchange measurements by the eddy covariance method and gas
chambers, and long-term monitoring of carbon pools and dissolved
carbon in surface water.
Main tasks of the position are:
• Analysis of environmental data
• Hydrological and biogeochemical modeling
• Development of a multi-source data assimilation approach
• Documentation of the results in peer-reviewed ISI refereed
Journals.
Requirements:
PhD or M.Sc. (or equivalent) in Geosciences, Physics or a related
discipline with a good final grade (in the German system 2.0 or
better); competent knowledge in hydrology, statistics and programming
(e.g. Matlab, C++, Python), an asset knowledge in carbon modeling,
data assimilation techniques and soil moisture dynamics are eligible.
The candidate should be highly motivated, fluent in German or English,
have good interpersonal communication skills, and be interested in
working in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists.
We offer the candidate excellent research conditions within an
interdisciplinary team.
