PhD Studentship in miRNA Biology,University of Copenhagen, Denmark

The Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, is recruiting a PhD student for a 3-year project to work on mechanisms of microRNA (miRNA) action in the newly established research group of Peter Brodersen. The group is housed in the recently inaugurated Biocenter in central Copenhagen, Denmark (http://www1.bio.ku.dk/).

The group uses the plant Arabidopsis thaliana to study mechanisms employed by miRNAs to regulate gene expression. A major subject of research is to understand the functional relevance of membrane association of components of the miRNA pathway, and to dissect the molecular mechanisms underlying their recruitment to membrane compartments.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a master degree in molecular biology or equivalent. Experience with standard molecular biological techniques (for example, recombinant DNA technology, western blotting, northern blotting, quantitative RT-PCR) will be a strong advantage. The applicant must be fluent in written as well as spoken English.

This PhD stipend will be co-financed by the Department of Biology and a grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

An assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the applications. The final selection will be done by Dr. Peter Brodersen and head of department, based on the recommendations of the evaluation committee. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science, University of Copenhagen.

Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 300.174 (equivalent to EUR 40.276) per year (April 2010 level) plus pension contribution DKK 41.013 (equivalent to EUR 5503) and the possibility to negotiate wage.
The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

For further information on the project contact Associate professor Peter Brodersen, e-mail pbrodersen@bio.ku.dk

Applicants are requested to submit their application by filling in relevant parts of the form “Application for PhD scholarship and enrolment to the PhD School” at http://www.science.ku.dk/phd/staff/forms/applying_forms/101025_Application_for_scholarship_and_admission.doc/. The form, together with appendices requested in the form including a 1 page description of background and reasons for applying for this particular stipend should be e‐mailed as a single PDF‐file to job14@bio.ku.dk Please include in the subject field “your name – PhD stipend in miRNA Biology”. In addition, a signed hardcopy of the application must be posted to “Peter Brodersen”, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, Ole Maaløes Vej 5, 2200 Copenhagen N, Denmark. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 12:00 noon Danish local time.

Applications received after the deadline, or with insufficient documentation or otherwise not complying with the above requirements, may not be considered. It is expected that the successful candidate will be enrolled at the PhD School of the Faculty of Science on April 1, 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter.*
