PhD Students in Personalized Cancer Medicine, Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), Finland

The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM, www.fimm.fi) was established in 2007 as a partner institution of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (www.embl.org) together with Nordic nodes for molecular medicine in Norway (NCMM) and Sweden (MIMS). FIMM is a joint venture of the University of Helsinki, the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS), the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. FIMM laboratories are located in a brand new state-of-the-art Biomedicum Helsinki 2 research building on the Meilahti medical campus in Helsinki.

FIMM is currently seeking candidates for positions of
*PhD Students in Personalized Cancer Medicine *
starting March 1st 2011 or sooner.

Description: FIMM is a multi-disciplinary research institute combining high-quality science with state-of-the-art technologies with the goal of building a bridge from biomedical research and discovery to medical applications. FIMM works together with the Helsinki Biomedical Graduate School (HBGS, www.hbgs.helsinki.fi) and other graduate programs to provide excellent research training and courses aiming at a PhD degree from the University of Helsinki.

We currently have openings for stipend-based PhD students in three collaborative projects specifically involving the Kallioniemi, Wennerberg, Heckman and Knowles research groups in the areas of Medical Systems Biology and Translational Research, with joint efforts in personalized medicine-oriented projects.

These three projects are focused on:
• Evaluation and development of novel anti-cancer drug combination therapies in vitro,
• Development of culture and extraction techniques of primary cancer cells for high-throughput and genome-wide applications,
• Establishment of techniques for monitoring signalling activities in cancer cells.

Qualification and experience: Candidates should have a relevant academic degree (MSc, MD or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, genetics, medicine or other related fields, obtained before the starting date or during the spring semester 2011, in which case the projects provide an opportunity to conduct master’s thesis. Prior experience with cell culture and cell biological techniques and expertise in DNA, RNA and protein work is expected. The successful candidate should also have good problem solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills. In addition, the candidate should be fluent in English, have good interpersonal and written and oral communication skills, and be able to work independently as well as within a multi-disciplinary team.

Application and selection process: The application should be written in English and include a cover letter, CV or resume, and a one-page statement of motivation and research interests. The application should be submitted as a single PDF file online at http://www.fimm.fi/en/open_positions/ no later than January 20, 2011. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be reviewed.

The selected candidates will initially be offered a stipend for one year with the possibility for extension for an additional three years pending successful review and funding availability. In addition, students will have the opportunity to apply to doctoral programs, such as HBGS.
