The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) is a new interdisciplinary institute with
the mission to carry out internationally outstanding research on the interactions of biodiversity
and climate change on the organism level. It has been founded by the Senckenberg
Gesellschaft für Naturforschung, the Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, and other partners.
The Centre is funded by the Federal State of Hesse through its Initiative for the Development of
Scientific and Economic Excellence (LOEWE). It provides a new, dynamic research
environment that integrates a variety of disciplines from both natural and social sciences. The
Project Area C “Biodiversity and Climate” invites applications for the position of a postdoctoral
researcher in the field of Climate Change Biology/Conservation genetics

PhD position in Global Change Genetics
Project C3.2 [Ref. #C38a]
The successful applicant will investigate the role of genetic diversity within and among
populations under Climate Change conditions. The main focus lies on the role of local genetic
adaptation potential and inbreeding depression under changing climate conditions. We will use
common garden laboratory and field approaches in combination with the assessment of neutral
(e.g., microsatellites) and adaptive variation (next generation sequencing, transcriptomics). The
work will focus on different model and non-model organisms of animals (e.g., Chironomus) and
plants (Arabidopsis). The applicant will take responsibility in study design, analyses of large
genetic datasets, statistical analyses and publication of the results.
The applicant should hold a Ph.D. in the field of evolutionary genetics, molecular ecology, or a
related field, and have a strong background in population genetic analyses and in advanced
statistical methods. Experience with the parallel handling of different projects as well as the
willingness to set up experiments with invertebrates and plants is highly desirable.
The applicant is expected to work independently, to have an interest in a wide range of
taxonomic groups, to have very strong oral and written communication skills and the willingness
to develop a joint project with multiple collaboration partners. Salary and benefits are according
to a public service position in Germany (TV-H E13, full position).
The contract shall start as soon as possible (probably 01.01.2012) and will run for 24 months.
The duty station will be Gelnhausen and Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The employer is the
Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung.
The Research Centre BiK-F advocates gender equality. Women are therefore strongly
encouraged to apply. Equally qualified severely handicapped applicants will be given
preference.
