Ultrafast 2D-IR Spectroscopy in Chemical Catalysis

Femtosecond two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) employs a sequence of ultrashort infrared laser pulses to measure couplings and correlations between vibrations of different parts of a molecule. Short-lived molecular species, which are out of reach for conventional techniques such as NMR, can be detected by 2D-IR and their structure and dynamics can be analyzed.

In our group you will develop and apply femtosecond 2D-IR techniques to investigate the structure and dynamics of short-lived species that are of prime importance for molecular recognition and advanced chemical catalysis. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with organic chemists with the goal to understand and develop novel types of catalysts that combine concepts of molecular recognition and supramolecular chemistry with enzyme-like catalytic activity.

We are offering a fully funded position for a PhD student in our group at the Institute of Biophysics of the University of Frankfurt, Germany. We are looking for a talented researcher with an active attitude, an accurate way of working, and excellent communicative and collaborative skills. As our new group member you should have (or be about to obtain) a degree in Chemistry, Physics or a closely related subject, be enthusiastic about expe-rimental research, and ideally have a background in one or more of the following fields: physical chemistry, organic chemistry, lasers, nonlinear optics, infrared spectroscopy, femtosecond spectroscopy, theoretical chemistry.

For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Jens Bredenbeck, breden-beck@biophysik.uni-frankfurt.de) and have a look at our home page (http://www.biophys.uni-frankfurt.de/~bredenbeck). Applications should be send by email, including a cover letter, your CV, and names and ad-dresses of two referees who would write a letter of recommendation.
