Post-Doc Position Molecular Virology Species barriers of hepatitis C virus replication

Job Advertisement Nr. 51/2011

The TWINCORE – Centre for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research offers a post-doc position in the research group of Prof. Dr. Thomas Pietschmann. Funding by the European Research Council is available for up to five years.

Post-Doc Position Molecular Virology
Species barriers of hepatitis C virus replication

RNA viruses are responsible for important acute, chronic as well as emerging human infections. While some of these viruses – like for instance the hepatitis C virus (HCV) – are highly species-specific, others (e.g. Dengue Virus and West Nile Virus) infect different host species. The reasons why some of these viruses are highly species-specific whereas others have a broad tropism are poorly understood. The key objective of the project is to precisely define all factors determining the species barrier to HCV replication in mouse liver cells. The inability of HCV to propagate in non-human cells may be due to lack or genetic incompatibility of essential cellular replication co-factors and/or due to operation of antiviral restriction mechanisms effectively suppressing viral replication in non-human host cells. For that reason we will identify and characterize both essential host dependency and restriction factors which are relevant to species-specific replication of HCV.

Your qualification:
Candidates should have successfully completed a university degree in molecular biology or a related subject and should have acquired a PhD in virology. He/She should have a strong background and deep interest in virology and cell biology. Experience with plus strand RNA viruses, cell-imaging techniques, genetic screenings and analysis of protein-protein interactions are of advantage. We look for creative and highly motivated individuals who wish to conduct research in an international and interdisciplinary team of scientists.

Severely disabled applicants will be favoured if they are equally qualified.
